Shen Jia - Week 09 (WIP)

Still trying to work out the colours.

Trying to find the right values for the bottom of the boat at the moment. I want it to be dark enough to make the fish pop out, but still be able to add a see a bit of details.

The bubbles and the godray effects are just placeholders at the moment. I was thinking at the very end, I can use some small bubbles here and there to connect the entire composition together a bit better.

Bought some dishwashing liquid today that has to my surprise the exact view of the fish that I was trying to explain to you :)

  1. Good work Shen. Values are ok at this point. Find a texture or paint roughly the lines (pieces of wood) under the boat. You don't have to cover the entire shape we see of the boat, just the middle section (between character and fish). You changed the view we have of the fish right? I think what I loved in your original thumbnail would work better. Let me know if it's not clear.

  2. Hey Donald, thanks for the feedback! I'll work on the fish again at that angle.

Right now, I have mainly been struggling with the values and lighting back and forth. I've never painted underwater stuff before so I've been trying to figure out what has been bothering me with it, but it feels like it just keeps getting muddier. Trying to figure out how to paint a fish that looks orange-red under blue water, and trying to show a bright sky through water.

Before, I was thinking about giving the girl red hair and show that through the illustration. I think I'll drop that idea.
