Week 6
I know I'm jumping ahead a bit here but I like to cram.
We had talked two weeks ago about the bottom image so I altered it with your feedback in mind; I changed the dimensions, placed the castle, and moved the victim's body to be perpendicular to the ghost. I also painted the broken pillar to be more believable, careful to show the damage on multiple planes. I think this image is more or less "finished," although I'm sure you have additional feedback, Donald. I'd love to hear it. I had briefly placed the castle in the middle as you had suggested but it simply felt too empty on the left when doing so. The tree limbs to the right make the composition heavy on that side so I wanted to balance it out a bit by placing the castle on the opposite side.
The middle image is for the alley prompt. Something feels slightly off but this may simply be because I'm not finished with it. The hero feels like she's floating a bit. I know the perspective is accurate (built in 3D), so I think maybe her flesh-colored legs might be the problem. They seem to "pop" more than I'd like.
Overall, I wanted this scene to feel fairly static; the hero has shown up after the victim has been slain and is more or less simply observing. I want to give her a sense of weight, power, and a general stoic quality.
The above image details my thumbnails for the space prompt. I want to emphasize more of the environment here (since I'm aiming to create such a portfolio) as well as the scale of space in general. Therefore, I want the astronaut to be very small. The alien probably won't have tentacles (too cliche). I was just placing it there for scale. I also want to imply more movement and action in comparison to my previous two images so I've played around with the idea of the alien ship or creature attacking the human vessel.
Thank you in advance.
Shen Jia - Week 6 (WIP)
Hi Donald! Here's what I showed in class.
Haven't worked on them yet so they are the same as I shared this Thursday.
Basically played with different directions and eventually came up with these sketches that I liked.
my head. 😅 I haven't found a composition yet that gives the feeling I was going for. I'll try what you suggested for 5.
I really like the composition for 11, but don't quite like the idea. It seems very...surface level, but I can fall back to it if everything else fails.
I feel I can't get the impact I wanted for 1 and 7 with the current aspect ratio so I want to give up on that idea. If the frame was much taller, I think I can give it the dramatic effect I wanted but I would prefer working on the other ones.
6 and 8 are based on sketch 12. It was the original idea I had, but it was made with a landscape format in mind. I really wanted the fins/arms to fly out, giving the monster some expression, but the portrait format crops out all but the fish's head. The idea is the fish monster was sleeping but woken up by the traveller passing by. It was annoyed and wanted to go back to sleep, so it tries to act mean to scare away the traveller. I'll play with some different compositions but I prefer to work on 3, 5 or 11.

I am biased towards the story element I imagined for 2 to 5. Unfortunately, it only makes sense in

BW sketch
Hi Donald, this is a rough sketch in black and white to study the contrast and lights. What do you think?
Week 5 - Duy Hoang - Thumbnail refined + image for color
Hi Donald,
I didn't have the chance to show you my progression of my thumbnail due of the lack of time yesterday. So, I was hoping that maybe you can give some points, tips or feedbacks for my thumbnail and the color palette I pick. If you got time of course. So, yeah.

My thought for this image is that I like the color feel and the ambiance that goes with this image. It can maybe gives a mysterious and creepy side for my illustration. Only few color for this one. Also, the light is just enough for a single room. So, yeah. I keep it simple.

Thumbnails - Brimrun
Hi!, this is what I got, I feel like I needed a better view on the boat
so i tried a new view in number 4 so I'm not sure now what I should
pick. I feel like I need to combine them together. Also some color

Color
Hi everyone,
for the next class I would like you to show me one image you will potentially use as a basic color
palette. Try to choose a picture with at least 3 distinct colors that you like and fit your subject.
Take at least 30 mins to browse through images and settle on one.
For most of you this isn't urgent but I just want to start talking about it with you so that we can
settle on it eventually.
See you thursday.
*Post your W.I.P. before TUESDAY if you can because I have a crazy week and cannot guarantee
comments after that.

thumbnail reworked
Hi Donald, I reworked my thumbnails. I really like #3 and think I might settle with that one but want to get your input before playing with lighting.

Week 4
Super quick thumbs. I'm leaning toward 1, but I like the potential for a good reflection on 3.
Also, I'm considering cropping the other two pieces like we talked about, Donald. I'm not sure I can make it work with the space piece but I might be able to pull something off with the ghost.

Early sketches ghost story
Hi Donald,
Those are very rough sketches where i was focusing only on composition without thinking too much about light and values.
Unfortunatly there are too many different ways to create this illustration and i don't really know wich one is the best. I hope you'll help me finding the one
Thank you in advance for your time

Bonjour,
Comme convenu j'ai développé l'idée, je vous remets les personnages pour référence.
Edit 1
The guy position was after a picture of myself like we talked about but the background was not so I understand what you say. I tried to correct it, I think it's better but I don't know if it resolves the main problem, I can't really tell.
I love Alex Ross so I'll go back to my books but I never heard about forced perspective, I mean I understand the concept in photography but I don't know how to apply it here. Anyway here it is
